Biochemist to investigate androgens’ role in women’s health

Dr. Licy L. Yanes Cardozo, assistant professor of biochemistry in the Department of Medicine/Endocrinology, will give the Department of Biochemistry presentation, “Do Androgens Play a Role in Women’s Health?” at 3 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 28, in classroom 3A.

Tuesday, Aug. 29

ASB to host CommUNITY celebration

The Associated Student Body will host a "UMMC CommUNITY Day" event at noon on Tuesday, Aug. 29, in classroom R354 (upper amphitheatre).

According to the ASB, the event is "our constructive response against prejudice and bigotry. This celebration of our diverse CommUNITY recognizes and affirms our belief in the dignity of all persons, regardless of their creed, ethnicity, spiritual beliefs, nationality, economic status, gender, sexual orientation and political ideologies."

Scheduled speakers include Dr. James Keeton, Dr. Juanyce Taylor and Chaplain Doris Whitaker. The event is sponsored by the ASB, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and the Office of Alumni Affairs.

South Alabama surgeon to give Grand Rounds presentation

Dr. Jon D. Simmons, associate professor of surgery and surgery residency program director at the University of South Alabama, will give the Department of Surgery Grand Rounds presentation at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30, in room CW 106 of the Classroom Wing.

Physiologist to question kidney therapeutic angiogenesis

Dr. Alejandro Chade, professor of physiology and biophysics and associate director of the Physiology Graduate Program, will give the Physiology Seminar Series presentation, “Therapeutic Angiogenesis for the Kidney: Can We?” from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Pennington professor to uncover weight loss difficulty

Dr. Steven Heymsfield, professor at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, will present “Obesity: Why is Weight Loss so Difficult to Maintain?” at noon on Thursday, Aug. 31, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

The seminar is sponsored by the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research, the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research and the Cardiorenal and Metabolic Diseases Research Center.

Medicine chair candidate to discuss heart failure drug developments

Dr. Javed Butler, director of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and co-director of the Heart Institute at Sony Brook University and UMMC chair of medicine candidate, will present “Similarities Between Drug Developments for Heart Failure and Providing Health Care” from noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Romanian professor to talk laser desorption ionization

Dr. Radu Iliescu, a professor at the Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Iasi, Romania, will give the Women's Health Research Center/Department of Biochemistry presentation, "Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization - Time of Flight - Mass Spectrometry for Protein Identification and Quantification," at 3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 11, in classroom 3A.

Chancellor, vice chancellor to speak at faculty meeting

Dr. Jeffrey Vitter, University of Mississippi chancellor, and Dr. LouAnn Woodward, vice chancellor for health affairs, are scheduled to speak at the fall faculty meeting at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 31, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Vitter and Woodward will provide an update on the university and the Medical Center for the next fiscal year. The agenda also will include a recognition of faculty with 20 years of service.
